TMD Jawache, Headache & Neck Pain
Danny is very honest about the work that needs to be carried out and all charges are discussed with you beforehand and you only choose to do the work you feel is necessary. There is no scaremongering in order to part with your money. So relieved to have found a dentist that I trust and feel is 100% interested in my best interests.
I highly recommend this dental practice. Danny and Susie are a very professional, friendly and experienced team. I have had several appointments where Danny has completed a thorough check of my mouth and replaced a number of old fillings. I have also had in-chair tooth whitening – which was excellent. Most importantly though was the jaw analysis that Danny carried out which helped me realize that migraines and facial pain that I had been experiencing for months was caused by my irregular bite and TMJ. Danny made me a mouthguard which within days started making a difference to all of my symptoms and almost a year later I am very happy to say that I am migraine free.
I was thrilled with the service I received, I am a nervous patient and felt pressurised at my previous dentist who was trying to do a filling quickly with a waiting room full of patients. I was nervous going to a new dentist, but Danny and Susie were lovely and patient, and I felt calm and I had great trust in them. My previous dentist was trying to treat the wrong tooth, but Danny listened to me and treated the right one, and I was thrilled when the weeks of acute pain stopped overnight. Danny is clearly specialised in the jaw/bite, which is great, and he looks at the deeper issues rather than just looking at top-level then trying to get you out quickly for the next patient. I definitely recommend Danny!
In December 2012 I started to feel unwell after experiencing excruciating pain in the left side of my jaw, dizziness & balance problems, earache, migraines, blurred vision, restricted opening of my mouth, tinnitus, sleeping problems and light sensitivity. After being referred to doctors, dentists and specialists for 8 months it was becoming clear to me that no-one understood my issues so no-one could diagnose me. As you can imagine I started feeling quite down thinking that I had to live with this for the rest of my life; not only was I now feeling down but also had to cope with all the other symptoms that had hindered me for some time now. I even took 5 months off work as I got so unwell I couldn’t carry out my daily work tasks. It was all doom and gloom until my husband found a site on the internet which displayed the symptoms I was having which referred us to ‘Danny De’villiers’, at this time I didn’t think anyone could help but thought he was worth a visit.
Well this was the best move I had ever made and a breath of fresh air to realise that Danny understood exactly what I was going through, he then performed numerous tests on my jaw and diagnosed me straight away with TMJ disorder (dislocation of the jaw joint) which he said could be treated. After having a splint on my lower jaw and an upper brace it has worked wonders to how I feel today and it has eradicated almost all of the symptoms that I initially had. All this is down to Danny, who is not only professional at all times but is really an outstanding dentist and if it wasn’t for him I would still be feeling unwell as described previously. I still have a little way to go with my treatment but feel back to my old self again which I commend and highly recommended Danny for.

What is the Temporomandibular joint?
The temporomandibular joint is the jaw joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull. This is immediately in front of the ear and has a disc in between. If the lower jaw is displaced, the disc can come away from its correct position, causing a clicking or grating noise when the mouth is opened.
What Causes TMD?
The dislocated joint can cause some of the above symptoms.
Injury to the, temporomandibular joint, jaw or muscles of the head and neck — such as from whiplash or a heavy blow — can cause TMD.
Diagnosis
At Danny de Villiers Dentist, we will routinely examine your jaw joint, condition and function as part of your new patient consultation and regular dental check-ups.
This can involve muscle testing, ranges of motion, joint vibration analysis (JVA), T-scan bite analysis, and in some cases an MRI scan if needed.
T-Scan Bite Analysis is a computerised analysis of your occlusion (the way your teeth meet when you bite). All teeth should come in contact with one another simultaneously with minimal force. When this does not happen, your occlusion is unbalanced and problems may result.
- Damaged restorations (crowns, bridges)
- Excess force on implants can lead to early failure
- Teeth can become loose or gums may recede
- TMJ – clicking, grinding or pain in your jaw joints, ringing or buzzing in your ears and difficulty in opening or closing your mouth could all be due to your teeth not meeting each other properly.
- Flattened worn teeth
- Continual sensitivity of your teeth to temperature change
JVA is a computerised analysis of your jaw joints. The procedure is simple and painless. We place instruments like headphones over your jaw joints while you open and close your mouth several times. The computer records the vibrations and saves the information for us to analyse. This helps us to decide whether you need treatment and if so, what kind.
Treatment
This normally involves wearing a splint on your lower teeth, to realign the lower jaw to it’s correct position and to help with grinding or clenching.
Exciting work has been done between the relationship of TMD and Tourettes Syndrome.
